CVC §21460 in plain English: what is prohibited

California Vehicle Code §21460 generally prohibits crossing double yellow centerlines. When two sets of double yellow lines appear (a "double-double"), they function as a painted median barrier and must not be crossed, except at designated openings or permitted turn locations as posted or marked.

Two sets of double yellow lines = painted median barrier

A continuous double-double yellow indicates a physical separation of opposing flows. Treat it like a median: do not enter, stand, or drive within the painted area. Crossing is only lawful where an official, marked opening exists or where signs/markings explicitly allow it.

Where designated openings allow crossing

Some locations provide a marked median opening to allow drivers to make a lawful left across the double-double into a driveway, side road, or a turn pocket. Use a single, decisive movement when safe and clear.

Driveway vs intersection recognition in CA

California distinguishes driveways from intersections; designated median breaks may serve either. Ensure you are entering a lawful opening rather than forcing a crossover through a continuous barrier.

No opening present: do not cross

If the double-double is continuous with no break, it functions as a painted median barrier. Do not cross for turns or to pass; wait for a legal break or a signed/marked turn opportunity.

Common ticket wording under §21460

Citation language often references "crossing double yellow" or "entering a painted median." When in doubt, treat any unbroken double-double yellow as a barrier until you reach a marked opening.

When you may cross: left turn, U-turn, and obstruction

§21460 permits limited movements that are not passing. You still must yield to oncoming traffic, ensure adequate visibility, and obey any posted signs or local restrictions.

Left turn into a driveway across double yellow in CA

A classic example is turning left across a single double yellow into a driveway. Make one clean crossover when the opposing lane is clear and no signs prohibit the movement. See left turn exception details.

Lawful U-turn locations under CA rules

U-turns must be made only where visibility and distance allow and where signs or local rules permit. If a double-double median exists, look for an opening. Review our U-turn across double yellow guide.
